Surreal uses fake celebrity names

Surreal is the favorite cereal of Dwayne Johnson. But it’s also the official cereal of Ronaldo, and Serena Williams called it “ace”. These are however not the people you probably expect them to be. The brand found ‘ordinary’ people with identical names to some of the most famous celebrities and paid them to endorse their cereal. Misleading? Maybe. Cheeky? Definitely.

Playing on people’s current associations with famous names, and piggybacking on the image of these names is clever. If Surreal is legally allowed to do so, we don’t know. However, taking some creative risks with playful advertising seemed to pay off big time, as they’ve got lots of traction on social media.
