Thinking of AR most of us are reminded of  a visual digital layer that you can place on top of the real physical world. PairPlay is about to change this. The audio company is experimenting with what sound AR sounds like.

PairPlay lets you experience audio in duo’s. When playing the audio you’re asked to stand in front of each other and split up a pair of AirPods while using the same device. It then delivers two different versions of a scenario, one to each earpiece. The immersive audio challenges are placing you at the center of the action, and turn your home into a rich cinematic universe where you’ll become ghost hunters, secret agents, robots, and more…

Currently it all sounds a bit of a hassle. Sharing your Airpods with someone else might already be enough reasons to not even try it. Although the current version is a bit inconvenient,  immersing people into an audio story while placing the story on top of reality could be very interesting for brands to stand out and get information across. Especially in a society in which more and more people are fatigued by their screens. Combine this with the advances in audio technology and sound AR might have potential to succeed. We’re curious to hear what the future of audio will sound like.
