Escapism is a trend that is widely recognized since romanticism (1820-1900). People wanted to escape from the grim realities of daily life, and fled into the arts, music and literature. In the 21st century the urge to escape reality is as strong as ever. The reasons to escape are plenty: global warming, the Middle East conflict, the financial crisis etc. Of course, the way people nowadays want to escape is different.
