NuSkool, education for Digital Natives

The Digital Natives are the youngest generation today. They were born between 1990 and 2005 and grew up surrounded by technological advances such as internet, mobile phones and social media. The Natives learn and think in a different way and have different priorities in life than older generations. This generations looks a lot like the preceding Millennial generation, but takes everything to the next level.

Eventhough the Millennials started the explosion of visual culture, Digital Natives are more visual than we can imagine. This young generation is looking for new and innovative ways to consume media and information. One initiative is NuSkool, an American online database filled with lessons on popular culture. You can select the grade you want material for (NuSkool offers material for grades six through twelve), on what subject and about what medium and out pops a lesson.

NuSkool offers math, beta, English, social sciences, history, art and creative writing. The media choices are music, film, tv, games, sport, social networks and popculture. It is developed by Abran Maldonado, a Gates Millennium Scholar. As they’ve stated, there are countless lessons to be learned in the everyday lives of youth. We just have to use them.

Time – The Me Me Me Generation

Time has published a six page long article about the millennial generation this week. Based on scientific research, Joel Stein describes millennials as ‘lazy, entitled narcissists who still live with their parents’. But not to worry, because according to Stein ‘they’ll save us all’.

The article describes what we’ve been advocating for the past three years: these millennials are addicted to their phones and online networks, they’ve gotten so many participation trophies that they feel entitled to constant praise and they don’t believe in hierachy anymore. But Stein is right when saying not to worry, because these millennials use their internet-addiction to their advantage, they are open-minded and pragmatic idealists, they are creative and innovative and they will save us all.
