After text messaging, MMS, MSN, iChat, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and WhatsApp we now have Snapchat. An app that allows users to send and receive pictures. Snapchat is one of the hottest apps available today. On a daily basis, more than 400 million snaps are shared. That’s 400.000.000 photo’s. Every day.
After the big move of teens away from the more traditional online social media the question was: why? Among the more obvious explanation of (grand)parents now appearing on their Facebook timelines and Twitter feeds, teens have more important things to worry about. Research shows that teens are growing up in a world that is becoming more and more visual every day. This has led the digital native generation to look for visual communication as much as possible.
Even day-to-day communication is becoming more visual. It started with the use of smileys and emoticons and is now progressing towards completely visual communication. This explains why teens are turning to Tumblr online, and why they are turning to Snapchat on their mobile phones.
